Scale and Polishes
A scale and polish consists of removing small deposits of calculus (tartar) from the visible surface of the tooth and any light staining. Not only will it make your mouth fresh and teeth clean, regular visits will prevent greater amounts of calculus forming on your teeth and under your gums.
Although calculus is inert, it does act as a plaque trap, which makes you more susceptible to decay and periodontal (gum) disease. Once the gum becomes damaged and calculus is found under the gum, a scale and polish is not enough. Instead, a more thorough periodontal (gum) treatment will be necessary.
It is better for the mouth, and easier for you, to have regular scale and polishes rather than waiting for a more involved periodontal treatment.
